Jermaine Beckford set for success at Everton?

Jermaine BeckfordIan Wright or DJ Campbell? Everton football fans will be asking themselves that very question about new signing Jermaine Beckford.

Like Wright and Campbell, Beckford has been in the football wilderness, until this year, when he will be trying to strut his stuff in the Barclays Premiership. Beckford has proved that he is a natural goal scorer in the leagues that he has played in. His tally of 73 goals in 126 games for Leeds United proves that fact, and yes you might say it was at a lower level, but Beckford can only score against players put in front of him, which he did in the FA Cup ties against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs. Beckford could or would have made a great signing for Arsenal. One thing Arsenal lack is a goal scorer and on a free transfer Beckford would have made an ideal signing. Why, because if he failed in his first year Wenger would have lost nothing but the small fee of the wages Beckford would have demanded but he would have still been able to command a sell on fee for him to a championship club. However, if he did succeed Arsenal could have been this season’s Premier League winners and Beckford would be close to the top goal scorer’s position.

In football there is a well-known saying that 'the bookmakers always wins' and if one follows that saying then bookmakers have made their mind up already on him and are saying that Beckford will fail in the Premier League. When betting on the Premier League top goal scorer the same old same old names will pop up Rooney, Drogba and Gerrard. But as Darren Bent proved last year, if you have a slight sense of where the goal is you will score.

Unlike getting promoted and playing for a poor team, Beckford is jumping up a league and joining an established top half Premiership team who have one of the most creative midfielders in the league in the likes of  Mikel Arteta. With players such as Cahill, Bilyaletdinov, Saha all playing around him and setting up goals, he will get the chance to score

In his first pre season game against Preston he scored a brace and with both finishes it showed his talent for finding the net, but once again this is pre season and anything can happen. The jury is out on him and will be until he is scoring goals at Everton.
