It’s a familiar bleak picture for Toon fans as their traditional start-of-season hope begins to wither and die after a string of disappointing early campaign results.

Alan Pardew’s side are winless after three games, having lost to Manchester City and picked up oints against Aston Villa and most recently Crystal Palace. The Palace game may have been a thriller for the neutral but it definitely highlighted the Magpies’ defensive issues. Wilfred Zaha’s last minute equaliser has flattened the side.

Meanwhile it’s a literally mediocre start to the season for a side who many thought would capitulate under the weight of their summer transfer activity. Having lost the majority of their first eleven in the summer, Southampton have now won one, lost one and drawn one in their first three games under Ronald Koeman.

The Saints’ consecutive losses to Liverpool and Leverkusen at the season’s beginning ended their 9 match unbeaten run, before Millwall and West Ham fell to the South Coast club to restore faith, while the Toon have won just 3 of their last 8.

The last meeting between the sides came in March where Mauricio Pochettino’s side ran out 4-0 winners, thanks to familiar faces Lallana, Lambert and Rodriguez. Now, none of the three will play this weekend to Newcastle’s relief.
